Just getting
to the State Meet is a great performance. I thought our kids did well.
It's very difficult to 'step in' and place without having been there. Bret
ran very well in the 100 meters. All the places were decided by thousands
and hundredths of a second. Gives you a little idea about how tough it
is.
I feel bad
for Logan. I got up Saturday morning and the wind was blowing. Logan has
never had a decent wind to help his discus. I thought 'The State Meet
loves big throws and sets up the ring to take advantage of the wind.' When
we got there the wind could not have been worse. It just killed the discus
throwers.
He threw well
in the shot though not as good as he would have liked but I think we all
went there to throw the discus. Some things you can't control.
Jordan and
Jacob had decent efforts but will be much better next year after having
been at the state meet and seeing the level of performance required to
place.
We had an
improved season from last year and Bret got us a point in the State Meet.
We need to understand that we must raise our performance level. We told
our kids all year long....raising your level of performance is harder than
you think it is and takes longer than you think it should.
Hopefully
these boys understand that and can bring that message back to the other
kids in our athletic programs. There are lots of good athletes in our
state.
2005 District Results We had a good meet. This District was one of the top Class B Districts in the State. The power events were excellent. Norfolk Catholic and Boone Central played in the State Football Championship so there were a number of excellent athletes. We thought our kids competed well. Our goal was to score 50 points and we got 48. We had a chance to pick up some points but that is how meets go. Bret Hoch was outstanding in the sprit events. He just keeps getting better. Breaking the school record in the 100 meters is really an accomplishment. He had some tail wind but ran 10.77 hand held last week so the 10.6+ he ran in districts converts to 10.7. Logan had a tough time in the slippery ring in the shot. He beat some good throwers to qualify and came back on his last throw in the discus to take 2nd. We took Jacob out of the triple jump to allow him to focus on the 400 meters and qualify. Jordan had two excellent jumps in the triple jump after finding the board! Patrick Heeney jumped very well but was in a very good field. The rain didn't help his mark but the kids that beat him were all very good jumpers. The relays were better than we thought they would be. We ran season bests in all three relays but were not good enough to qualify. We are looking forward to taking these kids to the State Meet and getting them some valuable experience at the highest level. One of the things we talked about all year was raising our expectations. Something a coach can't give you is a belief in yourself and a willingness to work hard when you are discouraged.
River Cities Conference Track and Field Meet. South Sioux City finished in 4th place. Meet Highlight- Bret Hoch tied the South Sioux City School Record running 10.8 while winning the 100 meters. As we all know the River Cities is the top Class B conference in the State. We have always said if you can do well in this conference you can compete on a state wide level. Again this week we had good performances but we expected to finish higher in individual events and in the team standing. A number of our kids had season bests but we expected a high level of performance. One of the things we have stressed this year is good marks in practice. We have had some very good practice efforts that have not translated into meet performances. That fact is very disappointing to everyone involved. The exception to this is Bret Hoch's school record tying 100 meters. Bret was very impressive in the 100 meter final. The past two weeks Bret has beaten some of the best sprinters in both classes. This Thursday we have a very difficult district meet. In order to qualify for state a good performance will not be good enough. Our kids must perform in a meet what they have done in practice.
Heelan 9/10 Invite We thought our younger kids competed very well. It wasn't a great day but we had a number of personal bests. We finished 4th overall. We had good solid performances and a number of personal bests. We were competitive in the meet. When it's your meet I think coaches and athletes like to see personal bests and medal winning performances. Logan threw very well against a very good field. He was a little disappointed in his discus because he has been consistent in the 160 area. It was good for him to compete against some of the best in the state. Bret Hoch pr'd in the 100 and 200 against some outstanding sprinters. Bret beat some really good people. Patrick Heeney jumped very well again this week and best some kids that had jumped over 21'. Mike Lethcoe Jordan Spirk and Jacob Bell had very good efforts in the high jump and triple jump for being relative beginners. We asked some younger guys to move up and race in the 400/800 either in the open or a relay. Kyle Bernstrauch, Alex Bahney,Brenner Pantoja, Tyler Hoch, Brandon Lantz, Tyler Donnelly all made a contribution to our team with their willingness to help. Nick Diediker and Bill Markworth continue to show improvement in the distance races. Beau Barkley Eric Rapp and Jason Steel all had personal bests in the hurdle races. BJ Jackson-TC Bigham-Jason Bobier performed well in the sprints or jumps. We were looking to see some improvements and we did. Hopefully this cool weather will move out and we'll get a chance to compete again on a nice night. We have a couple of meets this week that should help set our team for the district meet.
