SSC Girls Track & Field
Team Competes at the NE Class A State Track & Field Meet
Check out the pictures
The SSC Girls Track and Field team competed at the State Track Meet at
Omaha Burke on Friday and Saturday, May 18th and 19th.
The girls competed hard and gave their best efforts and came home with
one state medal to show for the weekend.
Jackie Humphrey place 7th in the Shot Put to cement her
status as the best thrower in South Sioux history. Jackie finishes her
career 2nd all-time in the Shot Put (3 inches from the school
record) and also 2nd in the discus, as wella very solid
career.
Staying in the Field Events, Nikki Hanish finished 15th in
the Long Jump with a jump of 15 7 1/2. Nikki has been battling some
painful shin problems this year being a double qualifier at the state
track meet is a fantastic effort. In the high jump, McKayla Knudson
failed to make opening height at the state track meet.
On the track, the 4 x 800 meter relay finished 16th in the
state, running a time of 10:50.18. Members of this team were Brittany
Stabe, Hillary Palsma, Sadie Cardwell, and Alexa Phipps.
The 4x400 meter relay also competed at state, finishing in the 14th
position, with a time of 4:26.43. Members of this team were Patty
Murillo, Kodi Fischer, Brittany Stabe, and Nikki Hanish.
Brittany Stabe also qualified for state in the open 800 meter run.
Brittany came in 15th at the State meet in her final
appearance. Her time of 2:33.13 was representative of her efforts all
year long. Brit has been one of the better runners in the state over
the last couple of years and will be missed by our team.
Finally, Patty Murillo qualified for state, individually, in the 100
meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles. In the 100 meter hurdles, her time
of 17.50 seconds garnered her 14th place; while in the 300
meter hurdles, her time of 49.83 was good for 14th place in
the state, as well.
All in all, we have had a very good year. We took a large number of
girls to state, and the majority of them were underclassmen. The
experience was a good one for all of them and will hopefully be
something which can be built upon in the future. The coaches are very
proud of these girls and all of our Track and Field athletes.

Girls 2007 NE District Participants

Girls
2007 NE District Participants
The SSC girls Track and
Field team capped capped the season with an impressive showing in the
A-3 district in North Platte on Wednesday, 5/9/07. While North Platte
is quite a trip for a district Track meet, the 9 girls going to state
would all agree that it was worth it. While we had no district
champions, we had a number of girls who managed to get second place
finishes. Headlining that list is Jackie Humphrey, who threw well as
she has done all year, locking up second place in the shot put and
another trip to state. Additionally, McKayla Knudson competed very well
in the High Jump, nailing down a second place finish and her first trip
to state. McKayla and Jackie both have strong chances to medal at the
State Track meet, as their district performances stack up pretty well,
relative to the rest of the state in their events.
Also qualifying for the state meet was the 4x800 meter relay team of
Brittany Stabe, Hilary Palsma, Sadie Cardwell, and Alexa Phipps.
This team has run well all year long and they continued this trend at
districts and came away with a second place finish, buying them a trip
to state. The 4x400 meter relay team of Patty Murillo, Kodi Fischer,
Brittany Stabe, and Nikki Hanish also qualified for state. The coaches
believe that this team has not maxed out yet and if they manage to knock
off a second per person, they will contend for the school record one
of the older records in the books.
Members of those relay teams also qualified in individual events.
Patty Murillo qualified for state in the 100 meter hurdles and the 300
meter hurdles. This is Pattys second trip to state and her performance
sets her up with a chance to qualify for finals and compete on the
second day. Nikki Hanish place 3rd in the Long Jump, also
good enough to get to state. Her jump of 163 was welcome after
struggling with shin problems all year long, its nice to see her back
closer to her potential. Brittany Stabe also qualified in the 800 meter
dash. Brittany had a very busy day and ran a strategic race which
allowed her to qualify, yet also allowed her t o run well 30 minutes
later in the 4x400 meter relay.
All in all, this was a very productive day, and a fun day for the SSC
girls Track and field team. The coaches are proud of everyones efforts
on this daywe had a number of kids who narrowly missed going to state,
and yet, still performed very well. What follows are the summary

Meet
Congrats to the Freshman girls Track & Field team for their narrow 2nd
place finish in the Freshman City meet. The girls tallied 107 points
and turned in some tremendous individual performances to finish out the
season. Highlighting the meet for the Lady Cardinals was the
performance of our hurdlers, as we dominated all of the hurdle events.
The Shuttle Hurdle relay team of Hannah Reed, Aisha Campbell, Sharon
Pond, and Tabitha Machar won their event, easily. Hannah Reed went on
to capture the City Title in the 100 meter hurdles, with Tabitha Machar
winning the 300 meter hurdles title. We had numerous 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and
5th place finishes. Congrats to all 12 girls for their tremendous

South Sioux City
Girls Track & Field Team 2nd in RCC Meet

The South Sioux City Girls Track & Field team competed in the River
Cities Conference Track & Field Meet on Friday, May 4th in
Ralston, NE. The girls competed hard and well and came away with a well
earned 2nd place finish. Highlighting the meet for the
Lady Cardinals was the performance of the 4x 400 meter relay team and
the performance of Long Jumper Nikki Hanish. The 4x400 meter relay team
has been progressively lowering their time in this event over the last
four meets, and have now managed to shave seven seconds off their time
since the Sioux City relays. Patty Murillo, Kodi Fischer, Brittany
Stabe, and Nikki Hanish make up the relay and will head into Wednesdays
district track meet in North Platte with a lot of momentum. Nikki also
jumped very well in the Long Jump event, clearing just over 15 10.
Nikki has been over 16 feet several times this year but is struggling to
recover from some painful shin splints and seems to be getting past the
worst of it. It will probably take a jump over 16 feet to qualify for
state. This is the last of our regular season meets, only about half of
our team will make the long trek out to North Platte to run in the
district track meet. It has been an enjoyable year, albeit a stressful
one with all of the weather problems. The girls attitudes have
generally been good and the coaches feel we have progressed and matured
as a team which leaves us expecting big things for next year.

Lady Cards Win Dakota Valley Invitational
On a hot, windy day, the South Sioux City Lady Cardinals competed very
well and came away with a championship plaque for their efforts. We
outscored Vermillion by a mere point to win the title. There were many
personal bests set today, and our team appears to be peaking the right
time of year. Highlights of the meet include Jackie Humphrey winning
the shot put, Patty Murillo winning the 300 hurdles, with teammate Nikki
Hanish finishing 3rd, McKayla Knudson jumping over 5 for the
second consecutive meet with a winning jump of 51. She moved the bar
to 55 Ό for three attempts at our school record, but came up a little
bit short. Alexa Phipps, despite having flu-like symptoms, stepped up
in a big way and provided 18 team points to our cause- winning the 3200
the first time she has attempted it, and placing 2nd in the
1600. Other notable performances include Nikki Hanish getting third in
the long jump, Kodi Fischer setting a new personal best of 32 Ό in the
triple jump to place third, Patty Murillo getting third in the 100
hurdles, Hillary Palsma getting third in the 800, and the 4x800 relay of
Hillary Palsma, Sadie Cardwell, Alexa Phipps, and Kacie Kavanaugh
getting third. This was a meet that illustrated the importance of every
point being important, as the difference between first and second place
was only 1 point. The girls hope to use this performance as a
springboard into the conference meet on Friday at Ralston.

South Sioux City
Girls Track & Field 3rd in SSC Invite
SSC Invite
Complete Girls Results
(Adobe PDF)
The South Sioux City Girls Track & Field team competed in the SSC Invite
on Friday, April 27th and came away with a solid 3rd
place performance in a 9 team field. The girls set personal bests and
seasons bests all day, up and down the lineup. This was easily our
best performance of the year. Headlining the meet for the Lady
Cardinals was Jackie Humphrey, who won the Shot Put and the Discus in
dominating fashion.
Jackies 39 10 Shot Put is the second best throw in school
history and inches her ever-closer to the school record of 40 1 held
by Lori Stingley. Her discus throw is also the second best in school
history. This was the best meet of her career. Also showing well for
the Lady Cardinals was the Shuttle Hurdle relay team of Taylor Thoreson,
Lindsey Kander, Katie Nissen, and Patty Murillo who ran 1;10.4, which
ties for the 3rd best time in school history, and less then a
second off of the school record. With all four girls returning next
year, the future appears to be very bright in that event.
A couple other performances worthy of mention would include
McKayla Knudson in the High Jump. McKayla got back on the right side of
5 with a jump of 52, narrowly missing 54 3 times in a row. This is
the best day of high jumping of her short SSC career. Also in the field
events, Salena Snake snagged a 3rd place in the discus with a
throw of 100 4 , the first time in several meets that she has been
back over 100. Alexa Phipps did not place in the 1600, but ran a time
of 5:51, which in most races will place her fairly high this was an
extremely positive development. Finally, our 4x800 meter relay set a
personal best by 10 seconds running a time of 10:30. Members of this
unit are Brittany Stabe, Hillary Palsma, Alexa Phipps, and Sadie
Cardwell.
All in all, many excellent performances. The following is a

South Sioux City Girls
Track & Field Compete in the Sioux City Relays
The South Sioux City Girls Track and Field team competed in the Sioux
City Relays on Saturday, 4/21/07. The Girls competed hard and came away
with some impressive performances from the weekend. Headlining the Lady
Cardinals efforts were Jackie Humphrey in the Shot Put. Jackie
competed hard after failing to make the finals in the discus. To her
credit, she didnt let a tough day in the discus, ruin her day. The
coaches are very proud of this effort. Jackie threw the shot 39 1
In addition to
Jackies success, Nikki Hanish had a fantastic day in the Long
Jump. Nikki jumped 16 4 1/4 to claim 3rd place in the
competition. Nikki entered the finals with the 8th best
jump, narrowly qualifying for the finals. She made the most of the
opportunity by improving her prelims jump by a foot and moving up 5
places in the compeitionnarrowly missing second.
Patty Murillo,
in only her second meet of the year, also had a good day, placing 4th
overall in the 400 meter hurdles. Pattys time was 1:10. 73, less then
a second behind her own school record, set last year. Pattys event, as
well as the events listed above came in the grueling open division
events, where all 3 classes compete against each other. These events
are extremely competitive and placing in one of them is an honor.
The 4 x400 meter relay team of Patty Murillo, Kodi Fischer, Brittany
Stabe, and Nikki Hanish finished 2nd in the B group
division of the 4x400 meter relay, finishing with a time of 4:20.20,
improving their best time of the season by 3 seconds. We hope to get to
state in this event and figure that it will take (at least) a 4:15
clocking to do it, so this was a positive development with several weeks
to go until the district track meet. The girls all competed well.

South Sioux City Girls Track and Field 3rd in City Meet/East
Invite
The girls track team competed in the East Invitational on Tuesday
evening April 17th. The City Meet which was postponed due to
cold, rainy conditions last Tuesday was made up during this meet as
well. The girls competed very well for the most part, with many
personal best performances turned in. Highlights of the meet included
Jackie Humphrey becoming a three-time City Champion in the shot put with
a heave of 393. Jackie also took home the gold in the discus with a
throw of 119. That throw was good enough to move her into second place
on our all-time chart, less than three feet from the school record of
1218. The shuttle hurdle relay team, consisting of Taylor Thoreson,
Hannah Reed, Lindsey Kander, and Patty Murillo won their event with a
time of 1:13.07. Nikki Hanish placed second in the long jump with a
season-best jump of 16 9 ½- good enough for third all time at SSC.
That jump also puts her in the top 10 in the state of Nebraska thus
far. Patty Murillo and Nikki Hanish also finished 2nd and 3rd,
respectively, in the 400 hurdles, both turning in solid times for this
point in the season. The girls totaled 108 points in the East Invite
scoring, good enough for a solid third place finish behind Sioux City
Heelan and Sioux City North. After dropping Seargent Bluff from the
scoring for the City Meet, we came away with 112 points and 3rd
place.

South Sioux City Girls Track and Field Competes in Dan Lennon
Invitational
The South Sioux City
Girls Track and Field team competed in the competitive Dan Lennon Track
and Field Meet on Monday, 3/26/07. The girls competed hard and well and
managed to come away from the meet with some impressive performances.
Headlining the
meet was Jackie Humphrey picking up where she left off at last years
State meet throwing the Shot 39 5 to capture 2nd place
overall. This throw is the second best throw in the state right now and
is a great start to her season. McKayla Knudson also turned in an
impressive individual performance in the meet in the High Jump. McKayla
managed to clear 50 for the first time in her career to capture the
third place plaque for the event. She also made a nice effort at 52,
particularly on her third attempt, and this is a promising start to the
year. The 4x400 meter relay team of Brittany Stabe, Kodi Fischer,
Hillary Palsma, and Nikki Hanish turned in a time of 4:23.76 seconds for
the event. This is the third fastest time in school history and, also,
a great start to the season.
