The
South Sioux City Cross Country Awards winners were
recognized at a banquet at the El Ranchito in South
Sioux City. These awards are voted on by the team. The
boys program made some strides toward competitive
success. The biggest plus was that fact that twenty boys
participated in the cross country season. Secondly, we
began to develop a ‘running attitude’ toward the end of
the season. We set two school records. Alejandro at the
Vermillion Invitational and Zan at the River Cities
Conference Meet at Omaha Skutt.
Alejandro and Zan qualified for the Nebraska State Meet.
We were in a difficult district with all three district
teams finishing in the top nine. Alejandro finished his
senior season meeting his goal of qualifying for in the
State Meet. Zan will get a chance to return. David
Pacheco and Moses Pacheco took advantage of the summer
running program and kept a record of their workouts. All
during the year they were 1 to 2 minutes faster than
last year. If they do that again this summer they will
improve even more. Hopefully their teammates will see
that year round conditioning is valuable.
Alex and Taylor just kept getting better throughout the
year. Taylor simply came to practice and worked hard
every day. I’m sure he was surprised by his progress.
Taylor will only get better. Alex tried cross county
for the first time and improved almost eight minutes
from his first attempt to run 5000 meters.
David Romo lead by example all year and our team members
recognized that fact. David had some little injuries
that kept him from his best race but next year he will
be competitive.
The same team recognition can be said for Luis and
Blake. The weight room can be a pretty lonely place
after practice. It’s good to have some kids that are
disciplined to work at developing that extra strength
that is so important for injury prevention and
endurance.
We have five of our six varsity runners returning so our
plan is to be competitive as a team next season.
It’s always easy to talk about next year but we feel we
made some progress this season.

The State Meet is a great experience for our
kids. It’s the opportunity to see the very best
and a chance to talk with athletes and coaches.
We ran about as well as we could. We had hoped
to finish a little higher. Our goal was the top
third. It was nice for Alejandro to finish his
running career in the State Meet. I know it has
been a long time goal of his. Zan is just
getting started and running in this meet will
only help him in the future. Hopefully he will
get two more chances to medal. We made some good
progress this year as a team. If we want to
compete on the state level we need to improve
even more.

The cross country ratings had Ralston #4 Skutt #7
and Blair #10 so this was a tough district.
Alejandro and Zan ran very well against a good field
to qualify for the State Meet in Kearney next
Friday. Alejandro was 25th last year
with most of the District Runners returning. Zan
has shown a lot of improvement in his first year of
running. Our other varsity runners were disappointed
to not finish higher. It was good to see some South
Sioux Boys back at the State Meet.
We made some progress this year but still need to
improve physically to compete as a team.
Looking at next year we only lose Alejandro. We want
our boys involved in our winter and spring sports.
We have always believe our kids need to develop some
other athletic skills and spend some time on the
road. I think most of our kids had a good
experience, I know I enjoyed coaching these kids. |

This was a tough meet. We have some really good
Conference Cross Country Teams this year. The top
three kids were under or near the course record. Our
kids ran very well and showed some good improvement.
Most of our kids were 1-2 minutes faster than last
year on the same course. A couple of weeks ago the
top three teams beat 12 good Class B teams out in
Kearney. It’s hard to be disappointed when your kids
run well and compete hard. Zan and Alejandro have a
good shot at qualifying for the State Meet. Another
plus us that our kids are confident that they can
run faster yet…that’s a good sign at the end of the
season. |

We
had a pretty good day. We ran well with most of our
kids running much faster than last year on the same
course. It’s nice to compete in the City and see
where we are compared to the other City schools.
Alejandro and Zan raced very well in a good field of
runners. Most of our kids were satisfied with the
improvement they have made so far.
We
have a couple of weeks of hard training left so we
plan to be competitive in the Conference and
District Meets. We get a chance to run in some big
hills on Friday at Crofton so we’ll see what
improvements we have made.

We
hadn’t run in ten days so we were looking for some
improvement as a team. We had a good team effort
with a number of our athletes having personal bests.
It was nice to have Alejandro and Zan in the medals.
We also had a nice varsity race from Moses. We still
need to have five guys run together so we have some
work to do. Our JV kids continue to improve. Daniel
and Alex showed that with some more conditioning
they could challenge for a varsity spot. |

This
was a really nice but difficult course. Wayne has a good boys team.
It was good to see how much we need to improve to be competitive.
Zan had a very good race for the first time he has ever run a cross
country race. The one positive was that we look like we can put four
guys together at the finish line. As the season moves along we will
improve as a team.
