NE State Cross-Country Results:

  • Congratulations to Autumn Boyer and Karyn Kelly for competing well at the State Cross Country Meet held in Kearney on the 19th.  Autumn saw her high school cross country career end on a good note for her, running a very respectable 16:56 on the course, good enough for 39th place.  She has been a great leader this year for the team and will be missed.  Karyn ran the course in 17:16, coming across in 56th place.  Karyn had a very good season this year, and looks forward to a strong senior campaign next fall.  Good job girls on a successful season!

  • Boys State:  Zan Loroa finished 47th with a time of 18.15. Zan was the lone boy qualifier for SSC.

When we look at the times our kids ran we had a very good effort. It’s always nice to have someone qualify for the State Meet. Zan continues to run well as did the rest of our kids.  We ran on the exact course we ran last week and our race was so much better time wise. We saw the same teams as in the Conference Meet plus Elkhorn and Blair so moving up our finish places was difficult. Last week we were disappointed in our effort but this week we were very pleased. We have had a good season and the kids have brought a good attitude and effort to practice everyday. We made some improvements in the two months of the season but allot of success is based on out of season participation in other sports and summer running.
A number of our kids are heading for wrestling in great shape, so we are excited for them to get started. Our other kids need to stay in the weight room and on the roads. Hopefully add a few more student-athletes to the cross country program.

Girls B-1 District Results:
Congratulations to Karyn Kelly and Autumn Boyer for becoming 2 time state qualifiers- Karyn finished in 5th place, running the course in 16:55; right behind her at 17:02 was Autumn Boyer coming across in 8th place.  Alejandra Rocha (19:19) finished in 32nd, and Hillary Palsma (21:16) finished in 43rd place to round out the scoring.  As a team, we finished in 6th place.  The girls have had a tremendous season, accomplishing things that they didn’t think or know that they could do.

River Cities Conference Cross-Country Boys Results:

Team Scoring Varsity Boys:  Beatrice 24, Skutt Catholic 32, Ralston 42, Gross Catholic 75, South Sioux City 89,
Roncalli/Browell Talbot 104
SSC Places: 8th Zan Loroa  18.14 26th Luis Deanda 20.50 30th David Pacheco 21.17 31st Dillon Jensen 21.36 35th Moses Pacheco 22.29 38th Sergio Guerrero 22.48

As usual it was an outstanding meet. The River Cities is simply the best B Conference in the State. Beatrice has a nice team that is in contention for the State Meet Title. Skutt and Ralston always field good teams. We were disappointed in our finish and how we ran. This is the first meet that we felt we did not run well as a team. We just looked and ran ‘tired’.

River Cities Conference Cross-Country Girls Results:  The girls ran in the conference meet hosted by Omaha Skutt yesterday.  Going into the meet we had high expectations for the kids, and for the most part they all delivered.  Karyn was leading the race until the last 100 meters, where she was caught by two girls to finish in 3rd place with a time of 16:57.  Autumn used a great kick at the end to pass a couple of girls to finish in 6th place in 17:22.  Two girls in the top 6 at conference was nice to see…especially since all of the teams but Beatrice will be in our district next week on the same course.  Alejandra continues to show signs of improvement, finishing the course in 19:59 to claim the 28th spot.  Hillary is battling some leg problems, but continues to run well for us- she ran 20:35 to finish in 33rd position.  The girls finished 5th as a team, scoring 68 points.

SSC Invite Boys Results:  Even though we were 8th in Class A we thought we ran pretty well. It was another great meet. Anytime you have four state championship caliber teams competing it’s going to be fun. Zan had another good race and continues to show improvement. Luis DeAnda had his best race of the year so that was good to see.
David and Moses are still bothered by shin splints that continue to hinder their training. Alberto is also still sore; hopefully we can get them all ready to race this week. Dillon continues to improve and will race in the Conference Meet this week.

SSC Invite Girls Results:  The girls competed well last night at our invitational held at Covington.  This was a great meet to see where we were at, both individually and as a team; there were some phenomenal kids there last night.  Leading the way again for the Lady Cards was Karyn Kelly, who ran the 4000k course in 16:32- good enough for 15th place.  Autumn Boyer was next, running 17:06 for 23rd place.  Alejandra Rocha ran the course in 18:48, and Hillary Palsma in 19:45.  The meet featured some of the best teams from the tri-state area.

Crofton Invite:
It was nice to see us make some improvement. Zan ran the fastest time on the course by a South Sioux athlete breaking Nick Rectors 18.40. David Pacheco had his best race of the year. Moses and Luis all ran much better than the last time on this course. With our meet coming up this week it was nice to see our training paying off. We still have a ways to go to be competitive in the Conference and District Meets.

The girls competed at the Crofton Invitational on Friday afternoon.  This was a good meet for us to see where we are at- Crofton is a returning state champion team, Norfolk Catholic will be in the hunt for one, Laurel Concord is a solid team. As a team, we finished in 5th place- 9 points out of third.  Karyn and Autumn ran really, really well- Karyn finished in 5th place with a time of 18:35, and Autumn was right behind in 7th place with a time of  19:02.  Alejandra Rocha was 22nd in 21:42, and Hillary Palsma finished in 25th place with a time of 22:06.  We are running out of days to work out- our meet is this Thursday, Conference the next week, and then districts the next.

City Meet
Boys Results:   We were certainly better on Friday than we were on Tuesday. We did not back off our training for this meet and it showed the last mile.  Zan was in the medals with his finish but was very sore from his weekend workouts. Some of our other kids are involved with out of season sports and we also still sore. Dillon had a nice race in the JV and may be ready to move up to the Varsity by the Conference and District Meets.  The weather, meet organization and lack of a time schedule were all problems that need attention from the City Athletic Directors.  This was the City Championship and needs to be run like one.

Girls Results:   The girls competed yesterday at the City Meet at Riverside Park.  Despite a rainy day and a muddy course, the girls ran pretty well.  We do not have five girls on the team, and in Iowa they score 5, so we did not record a team place.  Individually, Karyn Kelly led the team with a 7th place finish in a season best time of 16:10 (8 seconds off of our school record for that course)  Autumn Boyer was right behind in 8th place with a season best time of 16:15 (more than a minute faster than she has run all season)  Alejandra Rocha finished with a time of 18:47, and Hillary Palsma ran the course in 19:36.  The girls competed hard and are starting to realize that their hard work is paying off.

Vermillion Invitational Cross-Country Meet:  Boys' Results
We thought we ran pretty well based on our times from last year. We had ten days to train so expected to see some improvement. Zan and Alberto got into the medals so that is always encouraging. Dillion and Sergio found themselves in front of the jv race and decided to stay there. We are still concerned with our depth. Moses David and Luis are all battling some injuries that have kept them from training. We still have a month of training so hopefully will continue to work hard and stay injury free.
Our middle school kids got a chance to run 4000 for the first time and we were pleased to see them compete so well.

SSC Cardinals Place 4th in the Wisner Pilger Invite
Norfolk Catholic is as good of a team as we will see all year. They also have eight to ten teams run in the small class about 150 runners.  It’s a good test of who has run over the summer and who did not! Between the rain days and hot weather we were not very prepared. We had a good effort from our team so we will get better. We need to improve and get some decent workouts under us. Our kids ran pretty well in comparing last year’s times.
