The South Sioux City Boys Cross Country Awards for the 2008 Season
Most
Valuable Runner: Zach Mahon
Most Consistent Runner: David Pacheco
Most Improved Runner: Luis DeAnda
Best in the Weight Room: Ryan Hernandez
Co-Hardest Working: Moses Pacheco David Pacheco.
Academic All Conference: Moses Pacheco David Pacheco Zach
Mahon Dillon Jensen
The
Cross Country awards are voted on by the team members. MVP Zach Mahon
was the lone State Meet Qualifier. Zach’s State Meet time of 17:43
ranks 10th on the all time South Sioux City list. David
Pacheco was the Most Consistent Finisher for the Cardinals, having the
highest finish average, not selected MVP. Luis De Anda was the Most
Improved. Luis improvement averaged nearly a minute on every course he
raced this fall. As a returning state wrestling meet medalist we think
Luis is prepared to compete for the championship again this year. Ryan
Hernandez was selected Best in the Weight room. Ryan placed 6th
in last years State Track Meet in the 100 meters and decided to run
cross country to improve his overall fitness. Like many busy
student-athletes Ryan needed to find time to lift and did so nearly
every morning during the season. Moses Pacheco and David Pacheco were
selected Hardest Working because their teammates couldn’t physically
tell them apart! We certainly couldn’t see a difference in their work
habits in the classroom or at practice. The “Twins” have been
outstanding role models in the classroom and in their various school and
athletic events.
We were
very please to have four of our six varsity runners selected as Academic
All Conference. The requirements are a minimum Grade Point Average of
3.5, Varsity Starter, Good Citizen. We are only allowed to nominate our
varsity runners.
We would
like to say “Thank You” to our Seniors Ricardo Franco, Sergio Guerrero,
Luis, Ryan, David, Moses for staying with our Cross Country program;
some since the 6th or 7th grade. All of these
young men meet the SSC School Board goals of being multiple sport
athletes, good students and citizens; from a coach’s view they have been
a joy to coach.

NE District Cross-Country Meet - Boys Results:
Zach Mahon
qualifies for NE State Meet - Congratulations!
This was a
tough District meet. We were disappointed to not run all that well as a
team. Zach had a great race and showed some nice improvement from the
week before. Our other runners were close or better than the week
before. We expected better performances since it was the district meet
and we had run well last week. It was a nice day and the other teams
wanted to run fast as well. I have really enjoyed coaching this group of
seniors. It would have been fun to make it to the State Meet with them.

River Cities Conference
Meet - Boys Results:
As usual
it was a very competitive meet. The team championship was decided by the
5th place finisher. Beatrice was a little better in the 5th
man. Our kids ran well. We were much faster than a year ago but not good
enough. Our District new week will look a lot like the Conference meet.
We add Elkhorn, Blair, Elkhorn Mount Michael so it doesn’t get any
easier. We certainly can qualify individuals and possibly as a team if
the points break right. We need to run a little bit better to give us a
chance.

Crofton Invitational Pictures
(Link outside of SSC School District)
Anyone
who has ever run at Crofton knows the course is quite a challenge. It
was hot windy and we had raced on Tuesday in the City Meet. We hoping to
use this race to help prepare for later in the season. We had really
mixed results looking at our performances. We have homecoming activities
and our meet this week so we’ve got plenty to do. Looking at last year’s
time we continue to get better but starting to run out of time.

Vermillion, SD Results
We thought we
would run better. We have had some pretty good workouts. Looking back to
last year we were faster but not as fast as I thought we would be. The
Vermillion course is certified so comparing last years times is pretty
accurate. We have a couple of races before our Invitational so expect to
see progress.

- Wayne Dual:
We had a
really nice day to run on a good course. We were disappointed that we
were not a little more competitive. We knew Wayne had a nice team from
seeing them at Wisner. Our times were better than a year ago so that’s
encouraging. We have ten days of training before Vermillion so we’ll
make some progress. We just need to pay attention to our training.

Girls Cross-Country at
Wayne Dual:
The girls
traveled to Wayne on Tuesday for a dual with the Blue Devils on a cool,
cloudy afternoon. Karyn Kelly led the team once again, winning the
contest in a time of 17:38. Kodi Fischer was the next Cardinal across
the line, finishing in a respectable 20:15. Alejandra Rocha (21:00),
Marva Navarette (22:05), McKayla Knudson (22:58), Sarah Carothers
(22:59), and Tavia Cleveland (24:07) also competed well for us. Wayne
had a nice team and put a decent pack of runners ahead of our second
place finisher, allowing them to claim the dual.
-
Boys Cross Country at
Wisner Invite:
It’s great to get started at such a quality meet. Lots of smaller
schools with great cross country teams. We wanted to finish higher but
need to improve. We were much faster than last year so that is
encouraging. Moses-David and Zach put in the best summer work so it’s no
surprise they were our team leaders. It is encouraging that we finished
close together. If we can improve as the season goes along we can be
competitive.
For most of our other guys this was their first meet. I’m sure they
think that they have trained hard but now know what the race demands. We
liked our effort. We just need to improve our discipline on our long and
weekend runs.

school division race, coming across in 17:45. She edged out a Norfolk
Catholic runner by one second. Alejandra Rocha was the next Cardinal to
finish, completing the tough course in 21:12. Kodi Fischer (21:16),
Sarah Carothers (22:14), Nikki Hanish (22:22), and McKayla Knudson
(22:36) came across in 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22nd place,
