Cardinal Christmas Basket Program

This December, volunteers from Dakota County, with support from the South Sioux City and Homer Community Schools, we will deliver 365 Christmas Food Baskets to underprivileged, disadvantaged and financially challenged families, limited income senior citizens, the disabled, and the Siouxland Family Center.  YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!

Through the generosity of our area schools, local civic organizations and dozens of community members and businesses who contribute money, food, and time, we can assist those in need of our help.  The “baskets” provided by the Cardinal Christmas Basket program will  contain staples such as canned food, fresh fruits and vegetables, flour, sugar, a turkey, ground beef, milk, bread and other items for a holiday dinner.

Tax-deductible contributions can also be sent to the South Sioux City Community Foundation, P.O. Box 987, South Sioux City, NE  68776.  Please indicate that the money is to be used for the Cardinal Christmas Basket Program.

November 20th-December 12th   all South Sioux City and Dakota City elementary schools, along with the middle school and high school, St. Michael’s School and Homer school students, will be holding canned food drives in order to obtain enough items to fill the baskets. Each elementary school that participates, the class that collects the most items, will be rewarded with a Pizza Party.

November 27th – December 12th Additional canned food collection locations will be at South Sioux City Chamber Office 4401 Dakota Avenue and Siouxland Bank 1001 West 29th Street

On December 9th, To provide ongoing financial support for this effort local civic groups will gather on Dakota Avenue at 13th, 21st and 29th streets for Bell Ringing beginning at 9 a.m.

Also, students will meet at 9a.m. – 12p.m. at SSC Hy-Vee to promote Cardinal Christmas Baskets.

December 13th, Mr. Luxford and high school students will meet at SSC Hy-Vee at 6:00 pm to fill boxes with items purchased from Hy-Vee.

December 15th, volunteers will gather at the North South Sioux City Fire Hall at 7:00 p.m. to fill boxes with items collected in the food drives.

At 7:30 a.m. on December 16th, volunteers will meet at the north side South Sioux City Fire Hall to deliver the baskets to the families.  Drivers, using their own vehicles, will get names and food at the fire hall, go to Hy-Vee parking lot to pick up additional item and then deliver to addresses given.  We will be making as many trips as needed to deliver all of the baskets. Bring a group or come by yourself – we will put you with a team to make these deliveries happen!
