Migrant Education Program (MEP) (spanish)
The Migrant Education Program is a federally funded program designed to meet the unique needs of all children of migratory agricultural workers by providing both supplemental educational and support services.
HOW CAN IT HELP MY CHILDREN?
The MEP helps migratory children meet the same standards expected of all children to achieve success in school.
SERVICES PROVIDED
The local MEP project offers services based on the needs of the migrant children it serves.
Educational Services May Include:
- Preschool program to prepare migrant children for success in school
- Summer school programs
- Tutoring Programs
- Services to help high school students graduate
- Portable Assisted Study Sequence (PASS)
- Continuity of Instruction between and among school districts and states
Supportative Services/ Activities May Include:
- Parent Advisory Council (PAC) which conducts meetings and other parent involvement activities
- Sharing of student information among the states when students move
- Medical, dental and nutritional services
- Advocacy for migrant children
WHO THE PROGRAM SERVES INCLUDE:
Children and youth who are younger than 22 who have not graduated from high school or does not hold high school equivalency certificate may be eligible for the MEP if they have moved:
- Across school district lines
- Within the last three years
- With a parent/ guardian or on his/ her own
- To obtain qualifying temporary seasonal agricultural or fishing employment
The work must be directly related to the planting, cultivating, harvesting or processing of crops, the processing of dairy products, meats, fish or shellfish, or caring for livestock. There are no ethnic, national origin, income or language requirements for the MEP.
