The Cardinal's Boys XC team finished 3rd at the NE B-2 District meet, and punched their ticket to the NE State XC Meet on Friday, Oct. 23, 2020 in Kearney. It was a very close and exciting race. He heads to the state meet next week as one of the top runners in contention for an individual state title. The senior duo of Moises Lupercio and Juan Balderas also placed inside the top 15 with Moises finishing in 5th and Juan finishing 13th. Senior Ismael Vera-Marin was not able to compete this week due to injury. Luckily he was able to finish his season at our home course last week in a life best of 25:26. This group of seniors have great leadership and have worked extremely hard. They will be sorely missed.

2017 Fremont Invite:  2017 Fremont Results  Our girls were in action yesterday at Valley View Golf Course for the Fremont Invite. This meet was set up in two divisions- a 9-10 race, and a 11-12 race. In the 9-10 race, Emane Ahmed continues to cut huge amounts of time in each race she runs, clocking a 21:55 to take 9th place in that division. In the 11-12 division, our girls ran very well, putting 5 in the top 19, but it wasn't quite enough to take the team title, as we finished 7 points out of first place. Sadie Rocha led the way with a season best time of 21:05 to take 5th, and Marybeth Rasmussen ran the best race of her career to take 14th place with a 22:17. Zoe Cigard was 16th, Kaley Rivera was 18th and Ximena Alvarez was 19th. We had many season best times yesterday! Next up is Norfolk next Friday.

2017 Plattsmouth Invite:   2017 Plattsmouth Results   The girls were in action Thursday, Aug. 31st at the always difficult Plattsmouth Invite. It's a great meet to go to, because there are so many teams and individuals there who are going to be placing at the state meet in October. This season's race included 7 returning state medalists, 7 teams that qualified for the State XC meet last season, and 2 individual state champions. Sadie Rocha led the way for us again with a great race, finishing in 10th place with a time of 21:27. Senior Zoe Cigard is continuing to figure out how to run a cross country race, and was our second finisher with a time of 23:00. Freshman Emane Ahmed, in her first varsity race, was our 3rd finished, covering the 5000 meters in 23:14. Kaley Rivera was our final scorer, running 23:50. Our times were definitely better than they were a year ago for the girls who ran both years.

2017 Heelan Cross Country Invite:   2017 JV Heelan Results  |  2017 Girls Varsity Heelan Results  |  2017 Boys Varsity Heelan Results
I thought the girls ran very well for the first meet of the year. We had to deal with a 40 minute weather delay where the girls were called to the line 3 different times, only to be sent back due to lightning. We handled it as well as we could have I think. Junior Sadie Rocha led the way with a 10th place time of 20:16, Marybeth Rasmussen was our 2nd runner (22:42), followed by Ximena Alvarez (22:53), Kaley Rivera (22:55), Zoe Cigard (24:04), Tuenedi Villicana (24:04), and Ashley Rios (25:33). The girls finished 5th in the team scoring. In the JV race, we were led by 2 freshmen: Emane Ahmed finished 3rd, covering a shorter 4k course in 20:11. Yesenia Balderas was 7th in 20:49. Great job girls!

2016 Plattsmouth Invite:  JV Results | Varisty Results  The girls started the season off at the Plattsmouth Invite - a meet that brings together many very good cross country teams. We had 22 girls run their first cross country race, so we were a little anxious as to how the team would perform. They held up great, and despite not having a full varsity squad, we scored better than we did last year. Leading the way for the girls was sophomore Sadie Rocha, completing her first cross country race in 22:12 to finish in 14th place. Senior Maddie Nieimeier was close behind at 22:45, followed by Tuenedi Villicana and Aisling Reyes to round out our scorers. On the JV side, our team finished as the runner up, with Kaley Rivera, Vanessa Sandoval, Shelby VanBerkum, and Brooke Solomon finishing as our 4 scorers in that race.

2015 Girls Cross Country

2015 Class A NE State Meet:  Haley Fritza competed in her final cross country race for SSC at the 2015 NE State Meet, and she made it a memorable one.  In the Class A state field, she put herself in the top 20 a mile into the race, and worked her way into 17th place.  As she started her kick to the finish she passed two girls at the end to finish in 15th place, securing a state medal and All-State recognition. This was the best race she has ran in her career - nearly 2 minutes faster than she ran the exact course 3 weeks ago at the UNK open. Her time of 20:17 put her in the top 30 all-class as well. Congratulations Haley on a great final race and a great SSC XC career!

Class A-4 District Meet 2015:  The girls were at Papillion LaVista South on Thursday, Oct. 15th for the Class A-4 district meet. This was the first time we have ever ran the course at Walnut Creek Recreation Area, and it didn’t disappoint. Leading the way again for the girls was senior Haley Fritza, becoming a rare 4-time individual state qualifier, finishing in 8th place with a time of 20:52. It’s hard to believe next week will be her last high school cross country race, as it will close out a stellar career at South Sioux City. Junior Maddie Niemeier ran 21:37 to finish in the dreaded 16th position, just missing the top 15 and a trip to the state meet. Maddie had a great season for us, attaining all-city and all-conference awards, as well as showing great improvement from last season. Vanessa Sandoval was our 3rd runner with a time of 23:11, followed by Tuenedi Villicana (23:34), Aisling Reyes (23:54), Kaley Rivera (24:18), and Cassie Stowe (25:08). We return all but Haley from our district lineup next season, and hope to continue to build on the successes that we had this season, next year. All of those girls except Haley and Maddie are first-year cross country kids, so hopefully they found out this year the importance of a good summer of running has a direct effect on how fast they are in the fall!

River Cities Conference Meet 2015

2015 River Cities Conference Champions
The girls returned to Covington Links yesterday to host the RCC Cross Country Meet. We had a fantastic night, with the girls running well enough to bring home the conference championship. This is the first time in 15 years that we have won the conference. The girls had a plan to win, and executed it perfectly to top Omaha Skutt by 1 point- 30-31. Leading the way was Haley Fritza, who finished as the conference runner-up. Maddie Niemeier used a fantastic last half mile to pass two girls and finish 5th, Gus Thramer held off a late challenge from a Skutt runner to take 9th place, and Vanessa Sandoval cut almost a minute from her time last week to finish in 14th place to secure the win. Also running on the varsity team last night was Aisling Reyes and Cassie Stowe. In the JV race, Kaley Rivera continues to cut large amounts of time from her races and finished in 4th place. Congratulations girls on a conference championship! We have our Class A district meet at Papillion LaVista South on Thursday where we will try to qualify some girls to the State Meet.

South Sioux City / Koebernick Invitational 2015
Full Results:  JV Boys & Girls | Varisty Boys 5k | Varisty Girls 5k
The girls competed at Covington Links Golf Course yesterday for the 40th annual SSC/Koebernick Cross Country Invite.  In a great field, we had almost all of our girls run season’s best times:  Led by senior Haley Fritza, covering the 5000 meters in 20:19 to finish 15th, close behind was Maddie Niemeier in 24th place with a time of 20:48, Augusta Thramer in 33rd with a time of 21:12, and Vanessa Sandoval in 44th with a time of 22:23.  Also running season best times in the varsity race were freshman Tuenedi Villicana and sophomore Aisling Reyes, running 23:27 and 23:28, respectively.  In the JV race, Kaley Rivera ran a fantastic time of 23:53 to lead the way.  I would like to thank everyone who came out to cheer on the girls!  It was a great atmosphere for a high school cross country meet; most likely the best around anywhere.  Thanks to our volunteers who ensured that everything ran smoothly.  I would like to also remind everyone to come back out and do it again next Thursday, same time, same place, as we host the River Cities Conference Meet.  Here’s a video of the drone footage…https://youtu.be/jjBMSVRkxHo

City Meet 2015 & Hendersot West High Meet:
Full Results:  JV Girls | JV Boys | Varisty Girls | Varisty Boys
The girls were at West high yesterday for the City Meet and for the third time in three tries, came away with two medalists. In a tough field, Senior Haley Fritza finished as City Runner up and Junior Maddie Niemeier finished in 9th place. We were missing three of our top six runners due to various sickness and injuries, but still managed to finish 4th as a team, which was nice to see. All of our girls ran well on a very difficult, slow course. JV competes next Friday at Crofton, while our varsity is in action next Monday at the UNK open in Kearney.

Fremont Invitational 2015:  Fremont Invite Full Results   The girls cross country team was in action for their second meet of the season at the Fremont Invitational. This was our second straight meet of very tough competition - some very good Class A and Class B Nebraska teams as well as many returning state medalists. We feel that this type of competition early in the season will do us a lot of good come district time. I thought the girls ran very well, with almost everyone cutting pretty substantial amounts of time from Plattsmouth. Some of that can be attributed to the cooler weather and somewhat more flat course, but a lot of it has to be a result of the girls continued effort to showing up and working hard every day. Haley led the way for us with a 10th place finish (20:41). Maddie also was in the medals with a 15th place finish (21:37). Rounding out our top five runners was Vanessa Sandoval, cutting over 2 minutes from last week to run 23:07, finishing in 25th place, Augusta Thramer, cutting over a minute to finish in 23:52, and freshman Tuenedi Villicana running 25:16 to take 33rd in the 9-10 division.

Plattsmouth Invitational 2015:  The girls started off the season yesterday on a hot day at the Plattsmouth Invitational- a meet that brings a who’s who list of the top teams in class B in the state of Nebraska. It’s a great meet for us to see where we are at early in the season, as there is no shortage of talent in the field. We were fortunate enough to have two medalists in the varsity race, with senior Haley Fritza finishing in 14th place, and junior Maddie Niemeier finishing right behind in 15th. We had 12 girls compete in their first cross country races yesterday, and they all showed great effort and realized that they could indeed race for 3.1 miles.

2014 Girls Cross Country

2014 Boys & Girls Cross Country Results

2014 NE State Cross Country Meet:  Haley made her third appearance at the Nebraska State Cross Country Championship and came away with a 27th place finish. This caps a great junior season for Haley, where she made significant gains over last year, and saw her become South Sioux City’s first RCC and City meet champion since 2002. Nice job Haley!

2014 NE A-2 District Meet:  Girls Results   The girls competed yesterday at Skyview Park in Norfolk for the Class A-2 District Meet. Junior Haley Fritza led the Cardinals with an 8th place finish in a great field to become a 3-time state qualifier. Her time was 21:03. Sophomore Maddie Niemeier was our second finisher, missing out on the state meet by only 8 seconds, finishing 21st. Also running for the girls yesterday was Dany Nuno, finishing in 26:41, senior Crystal Holloway finished her SSC cross country career with a time of 26:51, Emily Ramirez ran 27:01, and Hannah Tindall ran 28:29. The State Meet is in Kearney next Friday.

2014 River Cities Conference Meet:  Girls Results  |  Boys Results   Congratulations to Haley for winning the River Cities Conference individual championship yesterday at Omaha Skutt high school. She took the lead 200 meters into the race and kept it to the end, winning by 30 seconds in a race that had the #3 team in the state and three returning state medalists. Haley's time was 20:22, just off the course record. Haley now owns both conference and city track championships, as well as both cross country championships. Also running very well for us was Maddie Niemeier, using a great last 1000 meter kick to get herself into the top 10, finishing in 9th place. Maddie time was 22:05. Third for the Cardinals was jr. Dany Nuno, running 25:44 to take 28th place and senior Crystal Holloway, running 25:53 to finish 29th. In the JV race, Emily Ramirez ran a great race to finish 4th in that race.

39th Annual SSC Marsha Koebernick Cross Country Invitational:   Unfortunately the event had to be cancelled because of weather & course conditions. Event will not be rescheduled.

City Meet 2014:  Varsity Girls  |  JV Girls  |  Varsity Boys  |  JV Boys   The girls were in action yesterday at the Adams Nature Center for the annual Sioux City “City Meet”. We had a great day for the most part. Leading the way for the Lady Cardinals was junior Haley Fritza who became South Sioux City’s first City Champion since the great Anne Shadle. Haley ran a great race, making a decisive move to take the lead about a mile in and never looked back, winning the race in a very good time of 15:27. Just a little more than a minute behind Haley was Maddie Niemeier, who finished in 14th place with a time of 16:38. Senior Crystal Holloway ran well as our third runner, crossing the line in 18:44. Dany Nuno was next for us in 19:04. Also running in the varsity race was Emily Ramirez, Maria Chavez, and Hannah Tindall, all finishing together in 31:00 after taking a little bit longer route around the Nature Center. We host our invite on Thursday, and appear to be running as good as we have been all year.

Crofton Invitational 2014:  Varsity Girls  |  Varisty Boys  |  JH-Middle School   The girls ran at Crofton on Friday, and for the most part had a pretty successful day. Haley led the way once again, finishing in 2nd place with a time of 21:23. Also finishing in the medals was sophomore Maddie Niemeier, running a time of 22:42 to get 8th place. Even though this meet was mostly made up of smaller schools, there was some very good athletes there. The girl who won was a state medalist last year, and there were several more included in the field. Crofton has won 8 straight state titles, and Norfolk Catholic and Wayne were both in the top three last season. Also competing for the girls was senior Crystal Holloway (27:22), junior Dany Nuno (28:35), sophomore Hannah Tindall (28:35), and sophomore Emily Ramirez (30:34). The team was 4th with 71 points. Nice job girls!

Norfolk Invitational 2014:  Norfolk Invite Full Results  The girls were in action on Friday at the Norfolk Invite held at Skyview Park. It was a challenging day for us- the weather conditions were hot and windy, and the competition was stiff- leading the way again for the girls was Haley Fritza, covering the course in 21:50. Maddie Niemeier was our second runner, crossing the line a minute later in 22:51 to take 32nd place. Also competing in the varsity race for the girls was Crystal Holloway (27:43), Hannah Tindall (29:27), Dany Nuno (29:50), and Emily Ramirez (30:26).

Fremont Invitational 2014:  Fremont Full Results  The girls ran very well yesterday at the Fremont Invite held at Valley View Golf Course just south of Fremont. The weather was a lot different than a week ago- at Plattsmouth the heat index was around 100, a week later we were talking wind chills in the 40’s! I thought we were better prepared to run well yesterday than we were in the season opener- both physically and mentally. Through two meets we have seen some very good Nebraska class A and B competition; our places this year are lower than the meets we ran last year, but our times are considerably better. Haley didn’t run her best race at Plattsmouth, and yesterday she saw a lot of the same girls who beat her there. She responded well, running a 19:50 time over 5000 meters- over 30 seconds faster than her previous best at that distance. This time gives her some confidence going forward that she can run with the best runners in area. Maddie Niemeier continues to be a nice surprise for us as well, running a very solid time of 21:12. With a little more improvement, she will be right in the hunt for a medal at district time. Although nobody else finished in the top 15 for us yesterday, every other South Sioux runner established a new personal record time (we even verified the course length with a GPS to make sure it wasn’t short- we just ran that well!). Some of the girls cut almost 5 minutes from their previous bests- we hope to continue this improvement over the next weeks of our season and peak in October.

Plattsmouth Invitational 2014:  Plattsmouth Full Results  The girls cross country team kicked off the season yesterday at the Plattsmouth Invitational, competing against 17 other teams. In addition to the tough competition, the girls also had the added challenge of a 99 degree heat index at race time, which made for a challenging first race. Leading the way for the girls was junior Haley Fritza, finishing with a 15th place medal (22:24). Sophomore Maddie Niemeier ran a fantastic first race, finishing in 22:55 to take 21st place. Also running in the varsity race for the girls were senior Crystal Holloway (28:12), sophomore Hannah Tindall (29:05), and junior Maria Chavez (30:29). Next up is the Fremont Invite next Thursday.

Girls 4-A State Results: Haley Fritza represented South Sioux City at the State Cross Country Meet in Kearney on Friday, Oct. 25, 2013 .  She ran a great race, near a season best time for her on a difficult course with outstanding competition to finish 36th out of 101 runners in Class A with a time of 20:38.  This caps a season for her where she has started to realize the great potential that she has if she is willing to put in the many miles that it takes to be a truly great runner.  This season saw her become the first Lady Cardinal to win a cross country invite in 8 years, and notch head to head victories over  6 2013 state medalists from other classes.  Congratulations on a very successful 2013 season!

Girls 4-A District Results: Congratulations to Haley Fritza for qualifying for the Nebraska Class A State Cross Country meet in Kearney next weekend.  Haley raced her way to a season best time of 20:21, good enough for 15th place in the toughest girls district in the state.  This will be the second State Meet that Haley will participate in.  Senior Audra Thramer ran a season best time of 21:36, missing out on the state meet by just over a minute.  Seniors Danielle Kersting (22:42) and Laura Gerkin (26:45) also ran well in their last races for South Sioux City.  Crystal Holloway (26:10), Emily Ramirez (27:05), and Yazmin Guardado (28:01) also competed well on a cold, breezy afternoon at Pioneer’s Park.  We got to see the top two teams in the state here- the girls got a good glimpse as to what “great” looks like!

Girls Results & Comments from the SSC Koebernick Invitational:  We hosted our 38th annual SSC Koebernick Invitational yesterday at Covington Golf Course.  Over 750 runners competed, and we had close to 2000 spectators make their way down there to watch some great cross country running.  In a loaded girls field, sophomore Haley Fritza continues her rise among the top runners in Class A Nebraska with a 5th place overall finish.  She ran a season best time of 20:24 seconds.  It was nice to see her finish ahead of every girl from the Sioux City schools, including the two girls who beat her Monday at the City Championships at West.  Danielle Kersting finished 17th in the class A division, with a season best time of 21:16, Audra Thramer ran a season best time of 22:10 to come in 33rd, Crystal Holloway knocked two full minutes off of her season best to finish 53rd (24:43), and Laura Gerkin ran a season best 25:11 to finish 54th in the A division.  As a team, we scored 108 points to come in 6th place in the meet.  Heelan was the only city school to finish ahead of us- we finished 5th on Monday in the City Meet as a team.  We’re improving every meet, and have two big meets left on our schedule - the RCC conference meet next Thursday at Mt. Michael, and then the difficult A-4 district at Pioneers Park in Lincoln.

Girls City Cross Country Meet:  Girls Varsity Results  |  Girls JV Results  The girls were at West High yesterday for the City meet.  Overall, I think we were a little disappointed with where we finished up- despite putting three girls in the top ten, the consensus was that we left a lot of seconds out on the course.  Haley Fritza led the way with a 3rd place finish, covering the three loops around the West campus in 17:17.  Danielle Kersting (8th- 17:47) and Audra Thramer (10th- 17:55) were also in the top ten.  Crystal Holloway (32nd- 21:20) and Laura Gerkin (34th- 22:08) rounded out the scoring five for us.  As a team, we finished in fifth place- scoring 87 points.  Heelan won the team title, with North coming in second.  We were five points out of third place.

Girls Crofton Invite:  The girls were in action on Friday at Lakeview Golf Course to run the hills in the Crofton Invite.  Leading the way for the Cardinals was sophomore Haley Fritza, who beat four returning state placewinners, and everyone else on her way to the individual championship.  She ran a season best time of 21:05, which puts her right in the thick of things going forward into the big meets of our season (City, SSC Invite, Conference, Districts).  Also winning medals for the girls were seniors Danielle Kersting (11th- 22:52) and Audra Thramer (15th- 23:05).  Other Cardinals who ran were Crystal Holloway (33rd-27:12), Yazmin Guaradado (8th JV- 28:03), Cristina Franco (10th JV- 28:32), Emily Ramirez (13th JV- 30:06), and Hannah Tindall (14th JV- 30:10).  The girls finished third in the team standings, behind Wayne and Crofton.  It was nice to beat Norfolk Catholic; they beat us earlier in the season at Wisner.

Girls Vermillion Invite:  The girls traveled to Vermillion on Friday, Sept. 20th for the annual Vermillion Invite and came away with a 1st place team finish.  Haley Fritza led the Cardinals with a second place finish, covering the 4000 meters in 16:57 seconds (57 seconds faster than her time from last year at this meet).  Coming in right behind in 3rd place was Audra Thramer, running 17:27 (43 seconds faster than last year) 4th place Danielle Kersting in 17:45, Crystal Holloway in 6th place (19:50) and Laura Gerkin (20:42).  The girls totaled 14 points to outdistance second place Vermillion.  In the Junior Varsity Division,  Emily Ramirez led the way with a 15th place time of 20:27, Yazmin Guardado was 16th in 20:57, Cristina Franco in 20:58, Abby Dreibelbis in 23:45, and Hannah Tindall in 23:54.  Nice job girls!  We’re at Crofton on Friday, Sept. 27th.   We have a lot of improving to do in the next two weeks to be ready for the big meets of our season.

Girls Dual with Wayne:  The girls were down at Crystal Cove yesterday for a dual with Wayne.  We ran really well through the top three spots, with Danielle Kersting leading the way with a 5000 meter time of 21:53 seconds to place second.  Right behind her in third place was Haley Fritza (21:53) and in 6th was Audra Thramer (23:54).  Laura Gerkin was our 4th runner with a 26:38 time, with Crystal Holloway (27:12), Cristina Franco (27:20), Yazmin Guardado (28:17), Emily Ramirez (30:37), and Hannah Tindall (32:10) rounding out the runners for the Lady Cards.

Girls Wisner Invitational 2013:  The girls had their first cross country meet of the season yesterday at Indian Trails Country Club in Beemer, NE, running in the Wisner Invitational.  We had a good showing, placing three girls in the top ten, and the others running solid times.  It’s hard to tell what a “good” time is this season, as the girls are now running 5000 meters vs. 4000 last season.  The three girls that ran last year all had faster 4000 splits this year than they ran last year, so the work they put in over the summer is apparent.  Leading the way for the girls yesterday was senior Danielle Kersting, finishing 4th with a time of 23:01.  Sophomore Haley Fritza was close behind in 6th, and was actually leading the race from the start to the 2 mile mark before falling back a little, running 23:30.  Senior Audra Thramer was tenth in 24:43, and Junior Crystal Holloway was 23rd (27:24) in her first cross country race to round out our four scorers.  Laura Gerkin was 25th (27:45), and Yazmin Guardado (32:47) was 32nd to round out the girls finishers.  We dual Wayne at Crystal Cove on Tuesday- they have a nice team- it’ll be a test for us.

2012 Boys & Girls Cross Country Results

Cross Country Awards & Season Summary:
Michael Carson:  Most Valuable and Co-Hardest Worker
Barento Ferhan:  Most Consistent
Austin Fritza:  Best in Weightroom and Co-Hardest Worker
Shelby Gonzales:  Most Improved

What do you think the boys cross country improved on the most? We ran a few more miles and did some morning runs
What was a highlight of the season? Our win at Wisner and runner-up at Crofton
What do you think about Michael Carson’s individual performance throughout the season? Michael has been a very good runner throughout his career. Qualifying four times for the State Cross County Meet is impressive.
His Performance at state? His performance at State was related to his pre-state meal. Sometimes on the road you get some bad food. We were all disappointed because we felt Michael could medal in the top 15 he finished 25th
What do you think about Ferhan’s performance throughout the season and at State? Ferhan ran well throughout the season. He needs to understand his performance is tied directly to his workouts. Ferhan is a good meet runner but needs to prepare harder. This will come as he develops a little more ‘running attitude’.
What do you love about coaching Boys cross country? Cross Country is a great sport because everyone has the same challenge to “push yourself and your teammates to higher levels of performance”. It’s a total team sport where every day you need to depend on each other to lead and follow.
Who do you think improved the most from previous years or just throughout the season? Shelby Gonzalez was selected by his teammates as the most improved.
How this season different from last year? We were much the same. As I said we worked harder but were disappointed we did not qualify our team for the State Cross Country Meet.
What’s a quote that you really like to use to motivate the team? We use a lot of them during the season. My favorite is the only person you need to conquer is yourself.
How do you motivate the team? I think I try to encourage athletes rather than talk poorly to them.
Finally what is your favorite memory about this season? Running in Stone Park. I have so many great memories of teams/individuals running the hills and trails at Stone. As the trees turn color it’s great to be on the trails…too bad I can’t run anymore!

Girls XC 2012 State Meet:  Haley Fritza competed at the State Cross Country meet in Kearney on Friday. Despite being under the weather, she gutted out 2.5 miles in 18:14 to come in 81st overall. It was nice to get that experience under her belt for next season; she wasn’t happy with her performance and that should motivate her to get back and hopefully be able to run the course at 100%. It’s always a fun time at the State Meet- a nice reward for the hard work and dedication that it takes to make it there. We’ll be back next season hopefully stronger, faster, and determined to move to the next level.

Boys XC B-2 District Meet: Boys District Results  The meet ran like it looked on paper. We didn’t get to see any of these teams during the year. Looking at results we thought   Michael Carson 6th and Ferhan Barento 10th  would qualify as individuals to the State Cross Country Meet next week in Kearney. Our team finished 5th in the B-2 District. Our team finish really shows Cross Country is a team sport and your 3-4-5-6 runner all make a big difference. There’s not much difference between a 5:56 pace and 6:00 but it is a big difference in the team scores. Austin Frtiza 24th Shelby Gonzales 32nd  Omar Montoya 36th and Jorge Reyes 37th  ran for the Cardinals.  We like to recognize and thank our Seniors Michael, Austin, Jorge and T.J. Hardy for their commitment to our Cross Country Program.

Girls XC B-2 District Meet:  Girls District Results  The girls ran at Bennington for the District Meet yesterday.  We thought that we could have run a little better, but looking at the results, we finished about where we belonged.  Haley qualified for the State Meet in Kearney next week- she competed hard and placed 14th  (17:16) to secure her spot.  Danielle finished in a disappointing 17th place, missing out by 2 spots (17:39).  Selma wrapped up her cross country career running 17:57 to finish in 23rd place. Audra and Laura finished in 30th (18:40), and 35th (21:17).  The course was difficult- 2000 meters out into a 20mph wind blowing off the lake made for a tough start!  We made great progress this year, and lose only one girl from the team going into next year- expectations are high; we will see if we can put enough miles on in the offseason to meet them.

Boys XC Conference Meet: Conference Meet Full Results  It was a well balanced River Cities Conference Omaha Gross has a nice team. Gross's Nick Larsen set a Conference record. We thought our kids ran well. Michael Carson 4th 17:36 missed the school course record by a second Zan Lora 17:35. Ferhan Barento 5th 18.01 Austin Fritza 18th 18.53 Shelby Gonzales24th 19.32 Jorge Reyes 31st 21:26 Omar Montoya 32nd 21:35 rounded out the team scoring.  We run an unscored-untimed JV race and placed Casey Bright-Ricky DeAnda and George Horner.  We've got the District meet at Bennington next week so it won't get any easier.

Girls XC Conference Meet:  Conference Meet Full Results  The girls ran well at Conference- once again, our times are significantly better on the same courses as a year ago. It was a little disappointing not to have a girl in the top ten, but on the other hand, was nice to have four in the top 20. We run well as a team, we need to push each other more next week if we hope to get anyone to Kearney. Haley Fritza led the way again for the girls, running 16:58 to take 11th place. Danielle and Audra were close behind in 16th, and 17th, running 17:40 and 17:43. Rounding out the scoring for us was Selma in 20th place (17:48). Laura ran 20:49 to get 33rd. We scored 64 points to come in third as a team, behind Omaha Skutt and Omaha Duchesne.

Boys Marsha Koebernick XC SSC Invitational:   Varsity Boys Results | JV Boys Results | 9-10 Boys | Middle School Results
It was another great SSC Invitational. We really appreciate all the volunteers and South Ridge Golf Course for allowing us to run such a great meet. We had nearly 600 kids registered to run and I think most of them did! It’s really hard to tell how we ran due to the size of the field and quality of the competition. We know we need to get better if we are going to compete for any Conference or District spots. We have been training pretty hard and I don’t think we rested enough for a meet of this quality.

Girls Marsha Koebernick XC SSC Invitational Varsity Girls ResultsJV Grils Results | Middle School Results
The girls ran great last night- we continue to cut lots of time from a year ago on the same courses, hopefully that continues these last couple of weeks of the season.  Tremendous competition last night- over 540 total runners.  We had a goal of being under 100 points, and just missed it scoring 102 to come in sixth behind some very, very talented teams in Sioux Falls Lincoln, Heelan, Yankton, Omaha Burke, and Spirit Lake.  It was nice to beat all of the other City schools; we beat a lot of girls that finished ahead of us a week ago at the Metro meet.  Haley Fritza led the way last night, running a personal best time of 16:45 to come in 18th place.  Danielle Kersting (17:03), Selma DeAnda (17:18), Audra Thramer (17:39), and Laura Gerkin (20:35) all ran well.  We have the RCC meet on Thursday of next week at Skutt High School.

Boys XC Crofton: Crofton Full Results Boys Varsity | Crofton Full Results JV   This was a really nice cross country course; lots of hills and challenges. Our kids ran fairly well. Michael Carson set a school course record of 17:21 finishing 2nd. Ferhan Barento 6th also broke 18 minutes. Austin Fritza 15th and Shelby Gonzales 18th completed the varsity scoring.
Omar Montoya was a medalist in the JV race and finished 40th overall. Other JV finishers and their overall place were Casey Bright 47th Ricky DeAnda 48th Jorge Reyes 53rd, George Horner 63rd Brandon Crowe 80th T. J. Hardy 88th.

Girls XC Crofton: Crofton Full Results Girls Varsity | Crofton Full Results JV  The girls ran well on Friday at Crofton & placed 3rd as a team, scoring 47 points.  We were a couple minutes faster than we were last year, but didn’t place as well.  Haley Fritza led the way with a 13th place finish running the hills in 17:12.  Close behind her was Selma DeAnda (15th- 17:17), Danielle Kersting (16th 17:19), and Audra Thramer (22nd 17:47).  Laura ran 21:30 to round out our scoring.  We placed fourth as a team, scoring 52 points.  Crofton’s girls are a nice measuring stick to compete against as they look like they are staring yet another state championship.  We’ve got our big invitational on Thursday this week, so we hope to continue to improve!

Boys XC City Meet:  Full Results City Meet Boys Varsity  |  Full Results City Meet Boys JV
We thought we would be a little more competitive. Since it was a new course it’s hard to tell whether we didn’t run well or the City schools are better than in years past. We like to compare this meet to the District meet in terms of quality. We certainly won’t be happy with being 4th. It was nice to have Michael back and he seems to have recovered from his injury.

The girls competed very well at the City Meet at North High yesterday. Despite a course that had many more hills than Friday’s run in Vermillion, all five girls ran season best times in route to a 3rd place finish. We missed out on the runner up position by 2 points to Sioux City West which hurt a little bit. We will see them at our meet next Thursday though. Danielle Kersting led the Cardinals with an 8th place finish in a career best time of 16:37. Following close behind in 9th place was freshman Haley Fritza in 16:51, senior Selma DeAnda 12th in 17:18, junior Audra Thramer 13th in 17:30, and junior Laura Gerkin ran 20:11 to finish in 33rd place. We are improving day by day, and hope to compete well on Friday at Crofton where we see a couple of teams that beat us early in the year.

Boys XC Vermillion (SD) Invite:  Varsity Results XC Vermillion (SD) Invite  |  Boys 5k Results  |  Combined JV Results  Based on the results it’s hard to say how much better we have gotten. Some of our kids improved a lot and some stayed the same on a very flat course. We know its legitimate 4000/5000 since it’s USD’s course. Some of our younger guys ran well at 4000 meters. Hopefully by the end of the year they can hold the pace for 5000.

Girls XC Vermillion (SD) Invite: Girls 4k Results  |  Combined JV Results   The girls competed on Friday, Sept. 14th at the Vermillion Invite and came away with a second place finish. We ran very well as a team, putting 4 girls in the top 11 on our way to scoring 37 points. Selma DeAnda led the way with a career best time of 17:19 for the 4000 meter course. Danielle Kersting (17:42) was next in 9th place, followed closely by Haley Fritza (17:55) and Audra Thramer (18:10) in 10th and 11th. Junior Laura Gerkin showed great improvement, shaving almost three minutes off of her best time by running 21:42. Our next meet is Tuesday at North High school for the City Meet, where we look to improve on last year’s 4th place showing.

Girls XC Wayne Dual: The girls XC team went to the Wayne Country Club yesterday for a dual with the Blue Devils, and came up just short. The team scores were tied at 18 after the race, but we lost on the tiebreaker. Leading the way for the girls was senior Selma DeAnda, covering the 2.5 miles in 18:26 to finish 3rd. Coming in 4th was Haley Fritza (18:54), 5th, Danielle Kersting (19:06), and 6th Audra Thramer (19:38) and 11th was Laura Gerkin (23:54). For as hot a day as it was, the girls competed hard and had a pretty good day.

Boys XC Wisner InviteFull Results   We had a good start to our season. Michael Carson ran very well. There were nearly a hundred kids in the race. Team wise we were solid with Frehan Barento Austin Fritza in the top ten and Shelby Gonzalez in the top twenty. Our younger guys Ricky DeAnda Casey Bright George Horner and Omar Montoya got into the medals so that's rewarding for them.
We'll see what happens in the next few weeks and what kind of training we can get in. We think we will have a nice team and the first meet it looked like we will.

Girls XC Wisner Invite:  Full Results   The girls opened their season at the Wisner Invite at Indian Hills Country Club in Beemer. We ran four girls in the varsity race, and all four came away with a medal. Leading the way for the Cardinals in her debut was freshman Haley Fritza, finishing in 5th place with a time of 18:47. Danielle Kersting, Audra Thramer, and Selma DeAnda finished close behind in 9th (19:00), 10th (19:12), and 11th (19:17), respectively. The girls had some very tough competition, finishing in a close third place overall in the team standings.

Girls NE State Meet:
Congratulations to Halie Hoch and Audra Thramer for their performances at the State Cross Country Meet last Friday. Both girls ended the season on a good note with a great race against many great runners from across the state. Halie ran 17:09 on a difficult course to finish 55th, and Audra ran 18:00 to finish 72nd. For Halie, that race ended a great cross country career and sets her up for a nice track season this spring, and for Audra, it serves as a motivator to return to Kearney the next two years.

NE District Meet:  B-2 Boys Results  |  B-2 Girls Results
It sure was a lot of fun; we just wish we could have found the two points somewhere during the season. District Meets are so much fun because so much is at stake. Our kids ran as hard as we could. Our times were good and our effort was good. The team result was disappointing. Moti and Michael continue to run well; against a good field. The teams that beat us were all in the end of the season rankings.

We were please to get back on the awards stand with our runner-up finish. We felt we didn't run very well based on our times. Our goal was to be competitive with Skutt and try to run man on man. We didn't run a very smart race. We went out way too fast and paid for it. We'll need to be much better at the District if we hope to qualify as a team for the State Meet.  Complete results: http://www.onlineraceresults.com

We were please at how well we ran as a team in such a big meet. We really don't have a lot of experience. It's easy to get lost and slowdown in such a big field. We felt our kids raced the whole way. We were fifth but the schools that were ahead of us have good teams and good programs.  We've got the Conference Meet and District so our performance level needs to stay high. It was nice to see Moti and Michael finish well.

We thought we ran pretty well. We haven't run at the "Cove" for about 25 years so we don't have times to compare. We know Wayne has a good team and we were competitive. I liked how we looked  through five guys. Sky and Ferhan ran really well as our 4th and 5th. Those two spots are the key to any good cross country team. Moti Michael and Austin will be competitive most any race we are in.

It might have been the hottest day we've had to train or race. We felt our kids ran very well. It's been awhile since we had four medalists. We knew that Moti, Michael and Austin would run well. Having Ferhan finish 13th, in his first high school race, was a bonus. Omar and Casey also ran well for freshmen.
Wayne was 4th last year in Class C and has everybody back. We weren't that far behind them on the course. We have dual on Tuesday so we'll see if we can improve running head to head rather than in a big group.

2010 NE State Cross Country Meet

Zach Mahon finished 54th at the State Cross country meet in a time of 18.05. Michael Carson was 62nd in 18.13. We felt both Zach and Michael ran a good race. The teams in our district finished 5th 6th and 10th in the team standings. The kids and teams from western Nebraska were better than we thought. It was an outstanding meet and a good way for Zach to wrap up his cross country career and Michael to see what it takes to earn a medal.
NE State District Meet - Boys
Congratulations to Zach Mahon and Michael Carson on qualifying for the NE State Cross Country Meet on Friday, Oct. 22nd at 1:30 at the Kearney Country Club, Kearney, Nebraska.  South Sioux City finished 5th behind four teams rated in the Top 10 in the latest poll.
Zach finished 8th   17.52 Michael 14th 18.06  Austin Fritza 24th  19.09 Jimmy Sedivy 29th  19.27 Breckin Anderson 44th  22.26 Jorge Reyes 46th 22.29.
The team ran their best times of the year so our effort was outstanding. We hadn’t seen any of these teams during the year so apparently the ratings were correct. Blair is a tough course to run with lots of turns. They did a really nice job of hosting the meet.
