Cross Country Awards & Season Summary:
Michael Carson:  Most Valuable and Co-Hardest Worker
Barento Ferhan:  Most Consistent
Austin Fritza:  Best in Weightroom and Co-Hardest Worker
Shelby Gonzales:  Most Improved

What do you think the boys cross country improved on the most? We ran a few more miles and did some morning runs

What was a highlight of the season? Our win at Wisner and runner-up at Crofton

What do you think about Michael Carson’s individual performance throughout the season? Michael has been a very good runner throughout his career. Qualifying four times for the State Cross County Meet is impressive.

His Performance at state? His performance at State was related to his pre-state meal. Sometimes on the road you get some bad food. We were all disappointed because we felt Michael could medal in the top 15 he finished 25th

What do you think about Ferhan’s performance throughout the season and at State? Ferhan ran well throughout the season. He needs to understand his performance is tied directly to his workouts. Ferhan is a good meet runner but needs to prepare harder. This will come as he develops a little more ‘running attitude’.

What do you love about coaching Boys cross country? Cross Country is a great sport because everyone has the same challenge to “push yourself and your teammates to higher levels of performance”. It’s a total team sport where every day you need to depend on each other to lead and follow.

Who do you think improved the most from previous years or just throughout the season? Shelby Gonzalez was selected by his teammates as the most improved.

How this season different from last year? We were much the same. As I said we worked harder but were disappointed we did not qualify our team for the State Cross Country Meet.

What’s a quote that you really like to use to motivate the team? We use a lot of them during the season. My favorite is the only person you need to conquer is yourself.

How do you motivate the team? I think I try to encourage athletes rather than talk poorly to them.

Finally what is your favorite memory about this season? Running in Stone Park. I have so many great memories of teams/individuals running the hills and trails at Stone. As the trees turn color it’s great to be on the trails…too bad I can’t run anymore!

Girls XC 2012 State Meet:  Haley Fritza competed at the State Cross Country meet in Kearney on Friday. Despite being under the weather, she gutted out 2.5 miles in 18:14 to come in 81st overall. It was nice to get that experience under her belt for next season; she wasn’t happy with her performance and that should motivate her to get back and hopefully be able to run the course at 100%. It’s always a fun time at the State Meet- a nice reward for the hard work and dedication that it takes to make it there. We’ll be back next season hopefully stronger, faster, and determined to move to the next level.

Boys XC B-2 District Meet: Boys District Results  The meet ran like it looked on paper. We didn’t get to see any of these teams during the year. Looking at results we thought   Michael Carson 6th and Ferhan Barento 10th  would qualify as individuals to the State Cross Country Meet next week in Kearney. Our team finished 5th in the B-2 District. Our team finish really shows Cross Country is a team sport and your 3-4-5-6 runner all make a big difference. There’s not much difference between a 5:56 pace and 6:00 but it is a big difference in the team scores. Austin Frtiza 24th Shelby Gonzales 32nd  Omar Montoya 36th and Jorge Reyes 37th  ran for the Cardinals.  We like to recognize and thank our Seniors Michael, Austin, Jorge and T.J. Hardy for their commitment to our Cross Country Program.

Girls XC B-2 District Meet:  Girls District Results  The girls ran at Bennington for the District Meet yesterday.  We thought that we could have run a little better, but looking at the results, we finished about where we belonged.  Haley qualified for the State Meet in Kearney next week- she competed hard and placed 14th  (17:16) to secure her spot.  Danielle finished in a disappointing 17th place, missing out by 2 spots (17:39).  Selma wrapped up her cross country career running 17:57 to finish in 23rd place. Audra and Laura finished in 30th (18:40), and 35th (21:17).  The course was difficult- 2000 meters out into a 20mph wind blowing off the lake made for a tough start!  We made great progress this year, and lose only one girl from the team going into next year- expectations are high; we will see if we can put enough miles on in the offseason to meet them.

Boys XC Conference Meet: Conference Meet Full Results  It was a well balanced River Cities Conference Omaha Gross has a nice team. Gross's Nick Larsen set a Conference record. We thought our kids ran well. Michael Carson 4th 17:36 missed the school course record by a second Zan Lora 17:35. Ferhan Barento 5th 18.01 Austin Fritza 18th 18.53 Shelby Gonzales24th 19.32 Jorge Reyes 31st 21:26 Omar Montoya 32nd 21:35 rounded out the team scoring.  We run an unscored-untimed JV race and placed Casey Bright-Ricky DeAnda and George Horner.  We've got the District meet at Bennington next week so it won't get any easier.

Girls XC Conference Meet:  Conference Meet Full Results  The girls ran well at Conference- once again, our times are significantly better on the same courses as a year ago. It was a little disappointing not to have a girl in the top ten, but on the other hand, was nice to have four in the top 20. We run well as a team, we need to push each other more next week if we hope to get anyone to Kearney. Haley Fritza led the way again for the girls, running 16:58 to take 11th place. Danielle and Audra were close behind in 16th, and 17th, running 17:40 and 17:43. Rounding out the scoring for us was Selma in 20th place (17:48). Laura ran 20:49 to get 33rd. We scored 64 points to come in third as a team, behind Omaha Skutt and Omaha Duchesne.

Boys Marsha Koebernick XC SSC Invitational:   Varsity Boys Results | JV Boys Results | 9-10 Boys | Middle School Results
It was another great SSC Invitational. We really appreciate all the volunteers and South Ridge Golf Course for allowing us to run such a great meet. We had nearly 600 kids registered to run and I think most of them did! It’s really hard to tell how we ran due to the size of the field and quality of the competition. We know we need to get better if we are going to compete for any Conference or District spots. We have been training pretty hard and I don’t think we rested enough for a meet of this quality.

Girls Marsha Koebernick XC SSC Invitational Varsity Girls ResultsJV Grils Results | Middle School Results
The girls ran great last night- we continue to cut lots of time from a year ago on the same courses, hopefully that continues these last couple of weeks of the season.  Tremendous competition last night- over 540 total runners.  We had a goal of being under 100 points, and just missed it scoring 102 to come in sixth behind some very, very talented teams in Sioux Falls Lincoln, Heelan, Yankton, Omaha Burke, and Spirit Lake.  It was nice to beat all of the other City schools; we beat a lot of girls that finished ahead of us a week ago at the Metro meet.  Haley Fritza led the way last night, running a personal best time of 16:45 to come in 18th place.  Danielle Kersting (17:03), Selma DeAnda (17:18), Audra Thramer (17:39), and Laura Gerkin (20:35) all ran well.  We have the RCC meet on Thursday of next week at Skutt High School.

Boys XC Crofton: Crofton Full Results Boys Varsity | Crofton Full Results JV   This was a really nice cross country course; lots of hills and challenges. Our kids ran fairly well. Michael Carson set a school course record of 17:21 finishing 2nd. Ferhan Barento 6th also broke 18 minutes. Austin Fritza 15th and Shelby Gonzales 18th completed the varsity scoring.
Omar Montoya was a medalist in the JV race and finished 40th overall. Other JV finishers and their overall place were Casey Bright 47th Ricky DeAnda 48th Jorge Reyes 53rd, George Horner 63rd Brandon Crowe 80th T. J. Hardy 88th.

Girls XC Crofton: Crofton Full Results Girls Varsity | Crofton Full Results JV  The girls ran well on Friday at Crofton & placed 3rd as a team, scoring 47 points.  We were a couple minutes faster than we were last year, but didn’t place as well.  Haley Fritza led the way with a 13th place finish running the hills in 17:12.  Close behind her was Selma DeAnda (15th- 17:17), Danielle Kersting (16th 17:19), and Audra Thramer (22nd 17:47).  Laura ran 21:30 to round out our scoring.  We placed fourth as a team, scoring 52 points.  Crofton’s girls are a nice measuring stick to compete against as they look like they are staring yet another state championship.  We’ve got our big invitational on Thursday this week, so we hope to continue to improve!

Boys XC City Meet:  Full Results City Meet Boys Varsity  |  Full Results City Meet Boys JV
We thought we would be a little more competitive. Since it was a new course it’s hard to tell whether we didn’t run well or the City schools are better than in years past. We like to compare this meet to the District meet in terms of quality. We certainly won’t be happy with being 4th. It was nice to have Michael back and he seems to have recovered from his injury.

The girls competed very well at the City Meet at North High yesterday. Despite a course that had many more hills than Friday’s run in Vermillion, all five girls ran season best times in route to a 3rd place finish. We missed out on the runner up position by 2 points to Sioux City West which hurt a little bit. We will see them at our meet next Thursday though. Danielle Kersting led the Cardinals with an 8th place finish in a career best time of 16:37. Following close behind in 9th place was freshman Haley Fritza in 16:51, senior Selma DeAnda 12th in 17:18, junior Audra Thramer 13th in 17:30, and junior Laura Gerkin ran 20:11 to finish in 33rd place. We are improving day by day, and hope to compete well on Friday at Crofton where we see a couple of teams that beat us early in the year.

Boys XC Vermillion (SD) Invite:  Varsity Results XC Vermillion (SD) Invite  |  Boys 5k Results  |  Combined JV Results  Based on the results it’s hard to say how much better we have gotten. Some of our kids improved a lot and some stayed the same on a very flat course. We know its legitimate 4000/5000 since it’s USD’s course. Some of our younger guys ran well at 4000 meters. Hopefully by the end of the year they can hold the pace for 5000.

Girls XC Vermillion (SD) Invite: Girls 4k Results  |  Combined JV Results   The girls competed on Friday, Sept. 14th at the Vermillion Invite and came away with a second place finish. We ran very well as a team, putting 4 girls in the top 11 on our way to scoring 37 points. Selma DeAnda led the way with a career best time of 17:19 for the 4000 meter course. Danielle Kersting (17:42) was next in 9th place, followed closely by Haley Fritza (17:55) and Audra Thramer (18:10) in 10th and 11th. Junior Laura Gerkin showed great improvement, shaving almost three minutes off of her best time by running 21:42. Our next meet is Tuesday at North High school for the City Meet, where we look to improve on last year’s 4th place showing.

Boys XC Wayne DualCongratulations to the boys cross country team winning over Wayne 15-24 Tuesday night. Austin Fritza 2nd 19:53 led the Cardinals followed by Ferhan Barento3rd 20:37 Shelby Gonzalez4th 20:46 Michael Carson 6th 20:53 Keenan Bearskin 7th 21:10 and Dillon Bearskin 9th 21:42 were the varsity finishers. Top jv finishers (no team Scoring)were Omar Montoya 23:22 Casey Bright 24:21 Geo Martinez 26:41 George Horner 27:15 Jorge Reyes 28:09 T. Girls XC Wayne Dual: The girls XC team went to the Wayne Country Club yesterday for a dual with the Blue Devils, and came up just short. The team scores were tied at 18 after the race, but we lost on the tiebreaker. Leading the way for the girls was senior Selma DeAnda, covering the 2.5 miles in 18:26 to finish 3rd. Coming in 4th was Haley Fritza (18:54), 5th, Danielle Kersting (19:06), and 6th Audra Thramer (19:38) and 11th was Laura Gerkin (23:54). For as hot a day as it was, the girls competed hard and had a pretty good day.

Boys XC Wisner InviteFull Results   We had a good start to our season. Michael Carson ran very well. There were nearly a hundred kids in the race. Team wise we were solid with Frehan Barento Austin Fritza in the top ten and Shelby Gonzalez in the top twenty. Our younger guys Ricky DeAnda Casey Bright George Horner and Omar Montoya got into the medals so that's rewarding for them.
We'll see what happens in the next few weeks and what kind of training we can get in. We think we will have a nice team and the first meet it looked like we will.

Girls XC Wisner Invite:  Full Results   The girls opened their season at the Wisner Invite at Indian Hills Country Club in Beemer. We ran four girls in the varsity race, and all four came away with a medal. Leading the way for the Cardinals in her debut was freshman Haley Fritza, finishing in 5th place with a time of 18:47. Danielle Kersting, Audra Thramer, and Selma DeAnda finished close behind in 9th (19:00), 10th (19:12), and 11th (19:17), respectively. The girls had some very tough competition, finishing in a close third place overall in the team standings.

Girls NE State Meet:
Congratulations to Halie Hoch and Audra Thramer for their performances at the State Cross Country Meet last Friday. Both girls ended the season on a good note with a great race against many great runners from across the state. Halie ran 17:09 on a difficult course to finish 55th, and Audra ran 18:00 to finish 72nd. For Halie, that race ended a great cross country career and sets her up for a nice track season this spring, and for Audra, it serves as a motivator to return to Kearney the next two years.

NE District Meet:  B-2 Boys Results  |  B-2 Girls Results
It sure was a lot of fun; we just wish we could have found the two points somewhere during the season. District Meets are so much fun because so much is at stake. Our kids ran as hard as we could. Our times were good and our effort was good. The team result was disappointing. Moti and Michael continue to run well; against a good field. The teams that beat us were all in the end of the season rankings.

:

We were please to get back on the awards stand with our runner-up finish. We felt we didn't run very well based on our times. Our goal was to be competitive with Skutt and try to run man on man. We didn't run a very smart race. We went out way too fast and paid for it. We'll need to be much better at the District if we hope to qualify as a team for the State Meet.  Complete results: http://www.onlineraceresults.com

We were please at how well we ran as a team in such a big meet. We really don't have a lot of experience. It's easy to get lost and slowdown in such a big field. We felt our kids raced the whole way. We were fifth but the schools that were ahead of us have good teams and good programs.  We've got the Conference Meet and District so our performance level needs to stay high. It was nice to see Moti and Michael finish well.

We thought we ran pretty well. We haven't run at the "Cove" for about 25 years so we don't have times to compare. We know Wayne has a good team and we were competitive. I liked how we looked  through five guys. Sky and Ferhan ran really well as our 4th and 5th. Those two spots are the key to any good cross country team. Moti Michael and Austin will be competitive most any race we are in.

It might have been the hottest day we've had to train or race. We felt our kids ran very well. It's been awhile since we had four medalists. We knew that Moti, Michael and Austin would run well. Having Ferhan finish 13th, in his first high school race, was a bonus. Omar and Casey also ran well for freshmen.
Wayne was 4th last year in Class C and has everybody back. We weren't that far behind them on the course. We have dual on Tuesday so we'll see if we can improve running head to head rather than in a big group.

2010 NE State Cross Country Meet

Zach Mahon finished 54th at the State Cross country meet in a time of 18.05. Michael Carson was 62nd in 18.13. We felt both Zach and Michael ran a good race. The teams in our district finished 5th 6th and 10th in the team standings. The kids and teams from western Nebraska were better than we thought. It was an outstanding meet and a good way for Zach to wrap up his cross country career and Michael to see what it takes to earn a medal.
NE State District Meet - Boys
Congratulations to Zach Mahon and Michael Carson on qualifying for the NE State Cross Country Meet on Friday, Oct. 22nd at 1:30 at the Kearney Country Club, Kearney, Nebraska.  South Sioux City finished 5th behind four teams rated in the Top 10 in the latest poll.

The team ran their best times of the year so our effort was outstanding. We hadn’t seen any of these teams during the year so apparently the ratings were correct. Blair is a tough course to run with lots of turns. They did a really nice job of hosting the meet.
