Good Afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen:
In an effort to be transparent with district happenings, we will continue to share updates. We are planning to make some small changes to the 2020-2021 School Calendar in October. This idea has been discussed with our administrative team, SSCEA Leadership and school board. We are planning to make October 16th a full day off for students and October 21st will be changed to a noon dismissal. The additional time will be used for prep time in your classrooms. These two half days will not be used for professional development or additional meetings. We recognize that we could all use some extra time to work on action items as we continue to meet the needs of our students this year. Through the commissioner’s advisory council, other Superintendents and I have requested the Commissioner and State Board of Education continue to look at giving us some flexibility this year as further calendar adjustments would be welcome. These days will not extend our calendar for staff or students.
The state DHM moved to Phase 4 earlier this month. We committed to reevaluate the situation as we got closer to October 1st. After collaborating with the Dakota County Health Department, it is recommended we continue in Phase 3 (yellow) for now. This will be evaluated again on or before November 2nd. Decisions are made in close collaboration with our public partners and specifically the Dakota County Health Department.
Practicing safety measures such as maintaining good social distancing, wearing a face covering when appropriate, washing hands frequently and staying home when you are sick is everyone's responsibility to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and to protect your friends, family, and neighbors.
Information on Phase 3 guidelines is available on the South Sioux City Community School District's website along with a health and safety document that outlines all phases.
