District Facility Study
The Facility Study – Next Steps
Last month, I shared that the school district had just completed a 3-phased facility study. Our approach to the facility study was to take a comprehensive look at the current condition of each school building, verify the program needs that support teaching and learning, and finally generate a master plan to address the facility needs that exist throughout the district. Over the course of the past month, the school district identified and implemented 2 strategies designed to move forward with the planning process.
The first step is to secure the services of an architectural firm with knowledge of educational programs and possess experience working with public schools. The board of education authorized the administration to issue a Request for Letters of Interest (RLIs) and selected three architectural firms from the Siouxland area to consider our building projects. The purpose of a RLI is to determine each firm’s interest in providing architectural and engineering services to the school district for general consulting and master facilities planning. The RLI requests each firm to provide experiences associated with the planning, financing and possible construction of improvements to the existing school facilities of the South Sioux City Community School District and possible new facilities or additions to existing facilities. Request for Letters of Interest were sent to Cannon, Moss, Brygger & Associates, FEH Design, and Neuman Monson Wictor the first week in January.
I also mentioned that we would soon begin the journey of collecting information from the community. The next step involves the development of a survey for the purpose of collecting feedback from the community about how they feel on different projects and to learn more about what the community is willing to support. We are in the process of finalizing the structure of the survey and plan on sharing that with the community very soon. This will be a relatively short survey and should not take much time to complete, and we hope you will spend a few minutes answering questions from the survey. We plan to use information collected from the survey to generate themes of support and where the community might have additional questions. From this effort, we plan to host of community forums to dive deeper into the building projects.
Your involvement and feedback in this process is very important to us. Please look for the day when your phone rings and you are being asked questions from the survey. Please look for more information about the ongoing process to address needs that exist in buildings across the district. Please go to the district website at www.ssccardinals.org for more information about the facility study.
