The students may be on summer break, but the learning hasn’t stopped! Our custodial teams across the district are in full swing with professional development, diving into best practices for summer cleaning and maintenance. Over the next two months, they’ll be hard at work preparing our buildings to ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for staff and students when they return. Thank you to our custodial crews for your dedication and behind-the-scenes efforts to keep our schools shining! #CardinalPride #SSCShines #TeamBehindTheScenes

At the May 12 meeting, the South Sioux City Community Schools Board of Education formally recognized three dedicated educators who will retire at the end of the 2024–25 school year. Each has made a lasting mark on our students, schools, and community through years of meaningful service. Rita Drieling has served as the school counselor at Lewis & Clark Elementary since joining SSC in 2015. Her steady, student-centered guidance has supported the social and emotional growth of countless Cardinals. Prior to her time in South Sioux City, Rita spent 25 years as a counselor with Emerson-Hubbard Community Schools, giving her a remarkable 35-year career of supporting Nebraska students. Cassandra Joseph began her SSC career in 2000, first teaching middle school math before transitioning to world language. Known for her dedication in and out of the classroom, she has served as a co-sponsor of MathCounts and Knowledge Master, and was an active member of the South Sioux City Education Association Negotiations Team. Her commitment to student enrichment and professional advocacy has strengthened both the academic and collaborative spirit of the middle school. Mike Caldwell has taught high school science since 2004, engaging students in hands-on, inquiry-based learning that brought complex scientific concepts to life. Beyond the classroom, Mike invested in students through coaching boys basketball and both middle and high school football. His dual roles as educator and coach helped shape a generation of student-athletes with discipline, curiosity, and character. We thank Rita, Cassandra, and Mike for their collective decades of service. Their leadership, expertise, and unwavering commitment to students have helped shape the South Sioux City legacy—and they leave behind a proud and enduring impact. We wish them each a joyful and fulfilling retirement.

What an exciting adventure! Some of our students had the opportunity to visit the Launchpad Museum for a special field trip! For many, it was their first time riding a bus—a memorable experience on its own! Throughout the day, we witnessed incredible moments of pretend play, problem-solving, and sharing! The trip also allowed us to spend valuable time with communication devices and practice essential skills. It was heartwarming for students to reconnect with friends from other schools and celebrate the impressive growth they've made this school year! We are so proud of our students and grateful for opportunities like these to learn and grow together! ❤️ #LaunchpadMuseum #LearningBeyondTheClassroom #ProudOfOurStudents #WeAreSSC #CardinalPride

This week, South Sioux City Community Schools partnered with Heartland Counseling to offer Youth Mental Health First Aid training to our dedicated teachers and paras! Through this valuable training, our staff learned how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health challenges in our students. By equipping our educators with these essential skills, we're committed to creating a supportive and safe environment for all students. A big thank you to Sarah Shanahan, Heartland Counseling, and Tammy Carson for their partnership and dedication to making this training possible! 💙 #YouthMentalHealth #SSCStrong #HeartlandCounseling #SupportingStudents #WeAreSSC #CardinalPride
