High School

I would like to welcome you, your student, and your family to the 2018-2019 school year!  Along with our team of administrators and our dedicated staff, I am looking forward to having your child(ren) attend South Sioux City High School.  We are all very excited to watch our students grow throughout the year ahead.

We look forward to seeing you at the Registration Event on Monday, August 6th, at the High School.  At this event, we will collect registration forms from every student who attends South Sioux City Community Schools.  This day is full of activities for the entire family.  You will be able to register your son or daughter for school, collect their laptop computer, obtain necessary information and forms for activity eligibility, and share in the excitement for the upcoming school year.  Unless 18, parents must be with their child to sign for the laptop.  We will be unable to issue a laptop to students if parents have not signed for receipt of the High School Handbook.  Also, students returning will be required to bring their backpack in order to receive their new computer.

School begins on August 15th for all incoming freshmen.  On this day, there will be a 12:00 PM dismissal.  Lunch will be provided for students on this day.  On August 16th, all students will report to the High School for the first full day of classes.  School begins at 8:00 AM and concludes at 3:20 PM.  Mondays are an exception to this, as our school day ends at 2:20 PM.  The Monday early dismissals give our educators the opportunity to collaborate and focus on student achievement.

School safety continues to be a top priority for our district and building.  All doors are locked throughout the school day.  All visitors must report to Door #12 on the east side of the High School to gain entrance into the building.  Please ring the doorbell upon arrival.  One of our secretaries will direct you to come into the building so that we can assist you.  All visitors will obtain a visitor’s badge while in the building.  All students will park in the student lot on the west side of the building and enter through Door #25.  Students will no longer park on the east side of the building as this is designated for visitors and staff.  We are thankful for the support you provide in making our building a safe and supportive environment for learning.

Another safety issue that has recently come to our attention is the use of headphones and electronic devices during school.  Headphones will not be permitted at anytime during the school day.   If a student is wearing headphones, it can prevent interaction and be unsafe.  The student may be unable to hear the intercom, staff, or peers; we thank you ahead of time for helping us keep our building as safe as possible by having your children keep their headphones at home.

This year, the High School will implement Standards-Referenced Grading (SRG).  This will allow us the opportunity to provide you and your student with feedback regarding the specific standards that they are accountable for learning.  On August 14th, we will have a presentation for parents who have questions or would like more information regarding standards-referenced grading.  During this meeting we will provide an overview of grading practices and be able to answer any questions you may have.  The meeting will be in the Little Theater at the High School from 5:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.  We encourage students and parents to access PowerSchool to find the most up-to-date information regarding their student’s academic performance.  If you need assisting in setting up an account with PowerSchool, please contact our office.

I am very honored to be able to serve as the Principal of South Sioux City High School.  I look forward to working closely with you so that your child has the successful experience they deserve.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.
